Feng Shui means 'wind and water', long believed to be the two most powerful natural forces. Feng Shui dates back 5000 years to China, where the principles were originally passed down from master to pupil orally, becoming formalised only around the 206 B.C. It is the writings of Yuen Kuen Chok of the Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618 - 906) which form the basis of modern Feng Shui as we understand it today. Feng Shui is the principle that natural and artificial features can either enhance or block the flow of the life force, ch'i. By the addition, removal or change of features within the home, garden or work place, we can improve and enhance wealth, health, and happiness. Positive ch'i is the invisible flow of the positive energy which surrounds everything. Flowing well, this ch'i promotes health and vitality. Whenever the flow of ch'i is blocked, those in the immediate vicinity will start to feel a certain amount of 'dis-ease'. We all recognise the feeling we get in some places that just don't feel 'right' or 'comfortable'. Similarly, when the flow of ch'i is directed to fast or too intensely, it results in feelings of tension, hyperactivity and anger, and the fast-flowing ch'i may carry away with it prosperity and happiness. Applying feng shui to your own home or work place need not be overly complicated nor expensive. The simplest of changes - changing the direction of your bed, for instance - can bring instant relief and positive benefits. Simple, inexpensive accessories like mirrors and wind chimes can be strategically placed to minimise any inherent difficulties in your surroundings.
