The moon has long been a source of fascination for mankind, and we know that it exerts an influence over water on earth, the female menstrual cycle, and our mental stability. The keyword of the astrological moon is receptivity. Astrological Facts about The Moon
The position of the moon in astrology indicates our emotional, instinctive response, and how receptive we are or are not to particular moods and thoughts. The astrological energy of the moon is changeable and fluctuating, moody even. Someone with a strong moon is likely to experience the full gamut of emotions, from high to low, at the slightest provocation. A strong moon is also sensitive, compassionate and protecting; indeed the astrological moon tells us much about our need to protect or be protected, and our need for both emotional and financial security. A person's moon qualities are, in my experience, much more obvious to a casual acquaintance than their sun qualities are. Often when someone writes to me expressing "disbelief" in astrology, because, for instance, their sun sign is Aquarius and they're not emotionally aloof at all, I find that they have a Cancer or Scorpio moon, the strong emotional force of which mitigates and over-rules the aloofness of their sun position. Of course, this is just more evidence that sun sign astrology alone is nothing more than entertainment; to get the full astrological picture, understanding of all of the planets, signs and houses is necessary, and the moon is a particularly important focal point in any natal chart. The Moon Through the Signs A brief overview of how the moon's energies will be expressed through the various zodiac signs: Moon in Aries: Quick to anger, very impulsive, accident prone, decisive, needs independence, sexually adventurous, selfish in personal matters, confident. Moon in Taurus: Strong need for emotional and financial security, defensive reactions when challenged, possessive, common sense approach to life, love of the good life. Moon in Gemini: Very verbally expressive, rationality may conflict with emotions, could suffer from nervous strain and excess nervous energy. Moon in Cancer: Extremely emotional and intuitive, defensive, vivid fantasy life, anxious, strongly family orientated, attached to the past, moody. Moon in Leo: Confident, assertive (often overwhelmingly so), creative, show-off. If other parts of the chart indicate a shy nature, the individual may compensate for this by excess showing off in public. Moon in Virgo: Talkative, expressive, literary/critical ability, overly self-critical, lack of confidence, shyness, diffidence and deference, emotional need to be of service. Moon in Libra: Tactful, diplomatic, emotional need to keep the peace, hates conflict, sympathetic, charming, sociable, indecisive, easily led. Moon in Scorpio: Extremely emotional and intense, powerful, sexual, jealous, extreme reactions to everyday situations. Moon in Sagittarius: Optimistic, positive, enthusiastic, 'get-on-with-it' approach to life, restless, reckless, may cut off nose to spite face. Moon in Capricorn: Cool, calm, low emotional level, aloof, ambitious, tendency to moan, possible lack of confidence, desire to impress with status. Moon in Aquarius: Magnetic personality, yet distant and aloof, even frosty. Enigmatic, unpredictable, original, inspirational with flashes of genius. Moon in Pisces: Compassionate, sensitive, responses always emotional, easily moved, creative, strong imagination and fantasy life, prone to escapism, susceptible to drugs, drink and depression. Sense of duty. The Moon Through the Houses The house position of the moon will indicate the life area in which the subject has the most instinctive and emotional response and attachment. Moon in 1st House: A first house moon softens the personality as a whole, especially if it is in conjunction with or close to the Ascendant. Shows a strong urge to care for others. Moon in 2nd House: A second house moon shows a great need for security, a likelihood of worrying about money (whether justified or not) and a tendency to collect things or remain attached to the past in some way. Moon in 3rd House: A third house moon shows an emotional need to communicate. This individual is good at talking through emotional problems, and has a thirst for knowledge, although much of that knowledge could be rather superficial. Moon in 4th House: A fourth house moon shows an emotional need to create a happy and stable family life. This individual is prone to 'empty nest' syndrome, and may even hold back their children, unconsciously, in order to keep them children for longer. Often a position which indicates shyness in public. Moon in 5th House: A fifth house moon is creative and joyful, especially with regard to children and sex. The approach to risks will be shown by the Moon sign. Moon in 6th House: A sixth house moon has an important influence on health and well-being. Good, regular health and work habits are vital for the individual with this position, and special care should be taken of the moon-related parts of the body. Moon in 7th House: A seventh house moon shows an instinctive emotional need for a partner. This is a person who does not feel complete alone. This position sometimes indicates that the individual has difficulty in asserting their own independence within a relationship. Moon in 8th House: An eighth house moon shows an instinctive connection with the deeper mysteries of life. Psychic ability is common with this placement, as is extreme jealousy or suspicion. Moon in 9th House: A ninth house moon shows an emotional need to stretch the intellect, but the day dreams of this person may not come to reality. Philosophical and moral decisions will be made based on emotions, not logic or facts. Moon in 10th House: A tenth house moon shows a need for status, recognition and personal achievement. This person will always be busy pursuing their next goal, even after they achieve each goal in turn. Moon in 11th House: An eleventh house moon shows an emotional need to belong, and to be liked. This person identifies with groups and may rely heavily on friendships. They may try too hard to be everyone's friend. Moon in 12th House: A twelfth house moon shows an instinctive need to withdraw, no matter how sociable the rest of the chart. This person would benefit from regular spiritual retreats; they need peace and quiet and suffer from sensory overload. This position also often indicates self-deception, secrecy, and difficulty in discussing emotional or psychological problems. |
